On October 8, 2010 Lowell Bennett Ulven, 62, Granby, MO, passed away at his home after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Lowell was born September 26, 1948 in Sac City, IA, the son of Donald Loren Ulven and Wanda Jean Janssen Ulven. He attended public schools in Nemaha, IA and was a graduate of Crestland High School, Class of 1966, in Early, IA and attended Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, IA for three years. He was baptized and confirmed in the United Methodist Church in Early.

He was married from October 12, 1969 to November 14, 1991 to Paula Steffen. They were blessed with three children that they proudly raised in Schaller, IA. During their time in Schaller Lowell was active in the community as a charter member of the Schaller Jaycees, a volunteer fireman with the Schaller Fire Department, served as a city council member, chaired Schaller Popcorn Days for two years and was active in the United Methodist Church serving as a youth leader and Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed bowling, card playing, slow-pitch softball and watching his children in extra-curricular activities.

Lowell married Darlene Sebek on October 22, 1994 in Schaller, IA. After a brief vacation they decided to relocate to Granby, MO in October 1996. Lowell and Darlene became avid weekend adventurers as they enjoyed traveling to auctions to find antiques and coins for Lowell’s extensive collection. Lowell traveled to 49 of the 50 states as well as Canada, Puerto Rico and Australia.

During his lifetime, Lowell was probably best known for his work ethic, great sense of humor and penchant for recycling. At the time of his passing he was a yard foreman for D&D Sexton Trucking CO., Carthage, MO. He will be remembered as a wonderful son, a loving and caring husband, devoted father and fantastic grandpa. Lowell never met a stranger, was always willing to help and will be deeply missed.

Lowell is survived by his loving wife Darlene; three children: Jennifer (Neil) Hantsbarger, Gardner, KS, Tate (Melissa) Ulven, Wildomar, CA and Stephanie Ulven, Des Moines, IA; three step-children: Ron (Lisa) Sebek, Monticello, MN, Scott Sebek, Buffalo, MN and Rachel Ankrum, Indianola, IA; four grandchildren: Candice and Cadman Hantsbarger, Rowen and Rylee Ulven; four step-grandchildren: Amanda and Andrew Sebek, Jeffrey Sebek and Britton Ankrum; three sisters: Marla (Steve) Jewett, Sloan, IA, Lori (Stuart) Sweeden, Rome, GA and Kari (Randy) Franken, Early, IA; his mother, Wanda Ulven Bulten, Early, IA, his mother-in-law, Mary Kuchenmeister, Buffalo, MN and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Loren Ulven, his beloved step-father, Eggo “Swede” Bulten, and grandparents: Olaf and Edith Ulven and Reinard and Frances Janssen.
