Sac City Council considers future garbage pick-up options

SAC CITY, IOWA – MARCH 28, 2011

On February 28, 2011 the Sac City Council directed City Administrator Adam Ledford to determine the difference in cost between replacing the city’s garbage truck and outsourcing trash pick up to a private contractor.

At the March 28, 2011 Sac City council meeting Ledford reported the results of that directive. He prefaced by reminding the council that he has taken no action that has committed the city to any course of action.

The first document Ledford discussed was a side by side comparison of what the cost to taxpayer will be under either of the two options.

As you can see from the document that the city council reviewed, the cost to tax payers is estimated at almost $14K on the outsourcing side, and over $19K should they decide to keep trash pick-up as a city service.

Ledford pointed out that commercial customers are not covered under the outsourcing scenario, and that Sac City gas customers may generously give the city money to cover part of the purchase of the garbage truck under the city service scenario. He also pointed out that under the city service scenario, the actual monthly cost of the purchase of a new garbage truck is a total estimate and may not reflect the actual monthly cost.

The council directed the city administrator to go out for bids for garbage trucks, but did not immediately commit to moving forward with city services.
