LAKE VIEW, IOWA – FEBRUARY 21, 2011

Tom Swanson of Lake View, Iowa appeared before the lake View City Council to talk about selling hot dogs down by Blackhawk Lake out of a vending cart. His primary concern is the $25.00 per day fee that the City of Lake View currently requires of all peddlers and transient merchants. He asked that the fee be lowered or adjusted so that he could afford to operate.

According to Swanson, Sac City, Iowa charges vendors $200.00 for six months and $300.00 for an annual permit.

Swanson further contested the label transient merchant in his case due to the fact that he will be at the lake every day. Lake View City Administrator Scott Peterson clarified for Mr. Swanson that he falls under the category of peddler.

As the conversation continued, Swanson shared with the public that he is on Medicare due to childhood diabetes, (for which he has been cured,) and that the state pays for his maintenance medications. Unfortunately the damage that was done, (nerve damage and partial blindness,) has left him unable to work as a builder. Seemingly, the hot dog vending cart is his answer to staying active and helping to pay for that medication.

As the conversation continued, the council determined that Mr. Swanson is a local resident who is offering for sale his own product and is therefore exempt from the permitting process, and instructed him to “sell away” as long as he doesn’t sell in the campgrounds.

Mr. Swanson is calling his vending business “Tommy’s Hot Dogs”.
