Committee to look into options for restoring Oakland Cemetery fence formed

SAC CITY, IOWA – AUGUST 23, 2010

During the August 23, 2010 Sac City Council meeting, a committee composed of Dave Engle, Jim Frederick, Bob Scheffler, Wilma Fort, and led by me, Curtis Bloes agreed to take a deep look into the unique problem of what to do about the fence at Oakland Cemetery. Lynda Cavanagh also became a member of the committee at a later date.

The goal of the committee is to restore the fence so that it retains its historical luster, but at the same time protects people who are about to bury loved ones from having to do so while staring at a fresh deer carcass… or worse.

The committee will take a good hard honest look at the fence, pillars, and nearby sidewalk to ascertain whether restoring it is actually feasible. When the committee has determined that, the fundraising portion of the project will begin.

At this time, with the exception of the acknowledgement that the city has already straightened at least half of the fence out, and the fact that they will continue to allow us to store it on city property, there are no plans to use or ask for the use of city resources in this process.

An initial meeting date for this committee has not been set.

Following is the video of Bonnie Mueggenberg’s impassioned plea for removal of and conversation with the council regarding the Oakland Cemetery fence.

Following is the video of the extended conversation wherein several possible solutions were discussed. Because I was speaking, I didn’t notice that I had hit an hour on the camera and the last few seconds of my portion, and the first few sections of Bob’s portion of the conversation is missing.

Following is the video of the vote to have the cemetery fence, as it sits now removed. It also contains the formation of the initial committee.
