POC: Sheriff Ken McClure

At 1:28PM on March 24, 2010, the Sac County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Larry Ort of Auburn. Ort told the Sheriff’s Office that he was having suicidal thoughts. Ort was mobile and would not tell the Sheriff’s Office his whereabouts. The Sac County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Iowa State Patrol started and area search in an attempt to locate Ort. A Sheriff’s Office negotiator stayed on the phone with Ort for over 3-hours while law enforcement tried to locate him. With the assistance of On-Star, Ort was located first near Lake City, Iowa and then again in Auburn. Ort was found by law enforcement. Ort lead law enforcement on a pursuit lasting approximately 40 minutes and reaching speeds in excess of 120MPH. Ort was stopped by a road block about ¼ mile east of Hwy 196 on 270th street south east of Sac City. Ort held law enforcement at bay with threats of using a handgun for about 45 minutes. The Sac County Sheriff’s Office negotiator was able to talk Ort in to surrendering without further incident at 6:21PM.

A .45 caliber handgun and ammunition was seized from Ort. Ort has been charged with numerous traffic violations, eluding law enforcement and carrying a concealed weapon. Ort was transported to the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines for an evaluation and will face the criminal charges upon his release.

Iowa State Patrol, Iowa State Patrol aircraft, Division of Criminal Investigation, Sac City Police, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Lake City Police, Sac City Ambulance and Sac City Fire all assisted during this incident.

  1. Glad no one got hurt. He has had a lot going on right now and a lot of it has to do with how our system treats Vets. Not good. Everyone has a breaking point and deals with it their own way. Thinking of you Larry and I hope you get the help and treatment you need.

  2. Thanks for the coverage on this! It's nice to not have to wait until next week's Sac Sun for the facts!

  3. I've rejected 2 comments so far in this "limited commenting on crime" experiment.

One comment was rejected for mocking the accused and one was rejected for alleging a crime for which the accused has not been charged.

  4. The rejected comment was from a scared neighbor of the accused pleading her case for this insecure man to be put into a location that will offer this man more supervision and the scared neighbor a better sense of safety. This scared neighbor was justified in using such language due to the unfortunate circumstances placed on the neighbor and its family. Hypothetically you were the neighbor of an insecure man with firearms at his disposal. Imagine living virtually ur entire life in fear of going outside due to a neighbor like this man. Would u say the exact same things? Would you be pleading for this man to get help? With the upmost respect to you sir, post the comment. Sincerly a person close to the "mocking" commentor.

  5. There is no justification in asking me to break the law and risk losing my business to publish an anonymous comment that alleges a crime for which the defendant has not been charged. Even if it weren't a legal issue, (which it is,) it would still be an ethical issue.

  6. ...and if your neighbor or anyone else has knowledge about a law that was broken, advise them to report it to law enforcement immediately.

  7. J.S. I believe you are a bit off base on your blaming of the system on this one. The system hasn't created issues in this case to bring anyone to any breaking point.. I'm pretty sure they are self inflicted issues nothing caused by "the System"

  8. Anonymous, unless you know him personally and know what "the system" has inflicted on him recently, then you have no reason to judge anyone. He was drastically taken off of pain medication by a VA Dr. that allowed his chronic pain to be somewhat managed. It wasn't working well so they said "Sorry, see ya later, live with it." He then got a letter from "the system" rejecting any further benefits due to THEIR MISTAKE and telling him he owes THEM MONEY FOR THEIR MISTAKE. So, check out facts and then look in the mirror before you judge. My husband is a vet as is all of the men in his family and have had waivering support and benefits from "the system". So unless you know first hand, silence is golden. I am not justifying what he did, it was wrong. But there are reasons why people make the decisions they do, and not all of them are good.

  9. J.S. I'll bet I know him as well as anyone.
So get off your soapbox. Whacha know, I guess I am a vet as well... but I don't choose to use "the system" as a scape goat. "the system" didn't cause his pain issues, he did, (yea, this I know for a fact) "THEIR MISTAKE", yea, it happens,, get over it and move on. We all make mistakes but most don't do things just to create attention for yourself.
    Have a nice day

  11. Yes, he made some bad decisions. However,I know him very well and yes the SYSTEM did fail him (as it has done others) Let me ask you this.. Have you been in chronic pain for years, not able to do the things you enjoy? Have you lost your freedom because of the pain? Have you been up against a wall with no one to turn to for help? He's been asking for help and has been turned away. To what extremes would you go to get help? What would you do ? No one can say for sure til they are walking in his shoes.
