ESC middle school wrestlers overcome anxiety about future of program and close out successful season

The East Sac County Middle School Wrestlers closed out a successful season. 14 young men, ten 8th graders and four 7th graders, participated this season. The 8th graders were Jordon Bieret. Caleb Hughes Heun, Justin Carstens, Taylor Strong, Derric Honeycutt, Tyson Meisheid, Tony Sexton, Michael Carnes, Casey Polacek and Adam Murley. The 7th graders were Damon Cook, Cassidy Hudson, Chris Villhauer and Austin Aschinger.

Middle School Wrestling is unlike other Middle School sports as there is no team score kept. This year the number of teams at each site ranged from three to eleven. The boys are matched up by weight and we generally try to keep boys as close in size to each other as possible.

This year, our wrestlers not only wrestled at meets, but they also had to wrestle with a number of conflicts out of their control. Because of a decision made last spring, the boys did not even know if there would be a wrestling team this season. Weather limited much of their practice time and also only allowed them to have six meets instead of the nine they could have had. Several of the boys experienced freak injuries and the middle school rescheduled their musical during the final week of the season. Despite all this, the boys won 36% of all their matches finishing the season at 46-81.

Win totals for the boys were:
Adam Murley - 11
Taylor Strong -7
Jordan Bieret -5
Chris Villhauer-4
Tyson Meisheid 4
Cassidy Hudson -3
Justin Carstens -3
Caleb Hughes Heun -3
Damon Cook -2
Michael Carnes -2
Casey Polacek -2

Injuries to Chris Villhauer, Justin Carstens and Caleb Hughes Heun prevented them from completing the entire season.

This was a fun group of boys to work with. They listened well and worked hard. We hope that the 8th graders continue into High School, because they will be able to compete with the returning wrestlers and contribute to the high school program.
