Kermit Chapman, age 92, of Sac City, IA, passed away, Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at Immanuel-St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato, MN. Kermit Holmes Chapman was born on April 9, 1917, in Truro, IA, to parents J. Lynn and Audrey (Holmes) Chapman. He graduated from Derby High School with the class of 1932. He went on to further his education at Iowa State College and graduated in 1940 with a degree in Agronomy. Kermit then joined the Army and served his country in WWII before being honorably discharged in 1945.


Kermit married Lois Jane Irwin on August 22, 1942, in Denver, CO. This union was blessed with two children, Richard and Janet. Kermit made a life for his family farming southwest of Sac City for more than 30 years. He also worked for DeKalb Hybrid Seed Corn Company in Humboldt, IA, Storm Lake, IA, and Deshler, OH. He was always involved with agronomy and served as county director of the ASCS office in Sac County from 1974-1984.


Kermit had many interests, which included golfing, fishing, and a love of sports. He especially loved following Iowa State University and University of Iowa athletics. He was very active in his community as a member of Kiwanis, Masonic Lodge, and the United Methodist Church, where he served on various church committees. He will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved him.


Those left to cherish his memory are his son Richard Chapman of Le Sueur, MN; daughter Janet (Jim) Sweeney of Raleigh, NC; four grandsons: Jeff (Sally) Chapman of Sioux Falls, SD, Brad (Talonna) Chapman of Savage, MN, Matt (Sarah) Chapman of Franklin, WI, and Mike Flohr of Maple Grove, MN; two great-grandsons: Jayson Chapman of Sioux Falls, SD, and Brandon Chapman of Franklin, WI; two great-granddaughters: Eden and Noelle Chapman of Savage, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.


He was preceded in death by his wife Lois, his parents J. Lynn and Audrey, and his brother Robert.
