Memorial Service: 1:00 P.M. Saturday, September 03, 2011 at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City with a lunch being held prior to the service, at 11:00 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church in Sac City.
Eva Marie Spicer Richards left us on August 29, 2011, and joined her beloved husband Ronald and dear daughter Bev in their heavenly home. She was weary after her 101 years and passed away peacefully, leaving a void in our lives but a lifetime of wonderful memories. She was born Tuesday, October 19, 1909, on the family farm in Sac County, next to the Sac City Airport. Eva Marie (Spicer) Richards was one of six children born to Sylvia (Masteller) and William Francis Spicer. Crystal and brothers Wayne, Lawrence, Loyd and Keith were an important part of her life. Eva attended the Cory Grove and Wall Lake Township Country Schools until the sixth grade. At that time, her parents paid the necessary tuition so she and her siblings could attend “town school” in Sac City. Mom was on the girls basketball team in high school. She graduated from Sac City Normal School training in 1927 and hoped to teach in the country school system, but she had graduated at 17 years old so she was only allowed to be a substitute teacher. She worked many places to help in the homes of others as well as at the Noble’s canning factory and Priebe Hatchery. However, most of her time was spent homemaking, sewing, baking, and of course, cleaning. She was very particular about that.
Eva and Ronald “Rondy” Leroy Richards had known each other since they were children, having been neighbors much of their lives. They were married in the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 22, 1930. Their good friends Pearl (Cleveland) and Merle Simpson stood up with them at the ceremony. They lived in the country for several years and moved to town in 1942. The couple had three children: Bev (Carnine), Loren “Swede”, and Myrna (Dougherty Henrich). Bev and Robert “Bob” Carnine have three children: Pam, Ron, and Julie. Swede and Bonnie (Auen) have three children: Dan, Lynae, and Laurie. Myrna and Rick Henrich have four children: Michele, Shelon, Tracy, and David. Eva belonged to the First Christian Church as a child and then was a member of the Free Methodist Church. In the early-fifties, the family became members of the First Baptist Church and for several decades, she served her church in many capacities.
Eva was very proud and honored when she was selected Outstanding Senior Citizen of Sac County 1979. She was involved with the Sac County Commission on Aging and the Nutrition Project, where she volunteered for many, many years. She was also very well known in her neighborhood for the great popcorn balls she handed out every year on Halloween. Eva and Rondy enjoyed music and played together in a small band known as the Tune Teasers and then The Ramblers. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in the First Baptist Church, Sac City, October 1980. Eva was a loving lady who was a real optimist and very good hearted. She loved music and playing the piano, although she always said she wasn’t very good. She liked to sew and make candles. Her faith and her family always came first in her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ronald; daughter Bev Carnine; brothers; Wayne “Pinky” Spicer and Lawrence Spicer; sisters-in-law: Madge (Richards) Hiner, Margaret “Dutch” (Richards) Finney, JoAnn (Page) Richards, Rita Richards, Lenore “Hattie” Richards, and Gladalynn “Tootie” (Burback) Richards; brothers-in-law: Robert Finney, Frank Hiner, Raymond “Fat” Richards, Franklin Richards, Wilbur Donald “Duke” Richards and David Mason.
There are many who grieve her passing: son-in-law, Bob Carnine of Odebolt and children: Pam and husband Jay Butler of Nevada, Ron Carnine and wife Vicki of Coffeyville, KS, and Julie and husband Bob Economaci of Des Moines; her son Swede and wife Bonnie of Sac City and children: Dan of Florida and family, Lynae (McMillen Dickey) Tesdall of Sac City and family, Laurie and husband Jim Gross and family of New Brighton, MN; her daughter Myrna and husband Rick Henrich of Kiron and children: Michele of Ames, Shelon and Shawn Gaustad and family of Blaine, MN, Tracy and her husband Rob Ashley and boys of Moville and David Henrich of Aurora, IL. Her great grandchildren: Anna Bawn-Carnine, Jennifer (Carnine) Gaines, Amy (Carnine) Johnson, Elizabeth (Richards Zellmer) Gergis, Devin Richards, Alissa McMillen, Emilee (McMillen) Belger, Ilaina (McMillen) Giberson, Orin McMillen, Ugene Dickey, Ylyndee Dickey and Ameiyra Tesdall, Ryan, Conner, and Kyra Gross, McKaela, Noah and Kaetlyn Bormann, AJ and Brett Gaustad and Blake and Wyatt Ashley. Eva’s great-great grandchildren: Shane Zellmer, Kaylee and Jacob Gergis, Devon, Morgan and Weston Gaines, Serenity and Bradyn Johnson, Aubree Belger, and Nathan Giberson. Other survivors include her brother Keith Spicer and wife Rosella of Sac City; brother Loyd and his wife Macle of Guilford, MO, and their girls, Linda, Cindy, Marjean, Kim and families; brother Lawrence wife, Norma and family, Sharril, Nancy, Arlin, Lennis and Mike and their families; her sister Crystal Mason of Leon and her children, Jack, Jerry, Dick, Jeannette and Mike and their families; brother-in-law Ben Richards of Sac City and boys Galen, Jeff and Steve and their families; children of Raymond Richards: Madeline, Mary, Ronald, Dennis, Carol and Jerry Richards and families; children of Margaret Finney: Michelle, Kathy and Carol and families; Charles Hiner and family; and many other extended family members. Although she is no longer with us, her memories remain forever.
