Sac City Council reject’s initial offer from owners of “Matt’s Shoes” building.

… direct city administrator to hire a structural engineer to examine building and make recommendations.

Sac City Administrator Adam Ledford received the following two correspondences from Dee Wunschel. The first one recounts the history of the agonies surrounding this property from the point of view of the Wunchel family, and the second is a report by a structural engineer that Ms. Wunschel hired to examine the building.

According to Ledford, the city attorney has recommended that the Wunschel’s offer be rejected. Ledford went on to say that the attorney recommended that if the council should want to accept the Wunschel’s proposal, that the deed not be accepted until after demolition of the building is complete.

Councilperson jim Frederick’s initial reaction was that $5,000 will not go very far and that the council should ask for a higher amount.

Director of Sac City Chamber/Mainstreet Laura Zimmerman recommended that the council get the opinion of another structural engineer. She seemed to take issue with the firsts engineer’s very cautious approach to the teardown procedure. Ledford shared with her that at the time of the initial inspection he was on the verge of hiring an independent engineer for $1,500. This price would be for an inspection only and did not include the price of having an engineer on site during the demolition process, should the city decide to take full responsibility for the procedure.

Sac City Mayor Barb Powell questioned the tone of the conversation that seemed to imply that it is the city’s responsibility to do something with the building.

The council directed Ledford to hire a structural engineer to do an independent examination of the building, and decided to not pursue the offer from the Wunschel family until they know how much it will actually cost to bring the building down safely.

  1. $5500 might cover the removal of friable asbestos which a building of that age likely has present. Don't want that floating all over the business district, getting into lungs and landing on big juicy steaks. God only knows how many old structures in town have been razed without proper abatement.
