Harkin Announces Federal Disaster Declaration for Sac County, Iowa

Washington, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has made a federal disaster declaration for six Iowa counties. This declaration will trigger the release of Federal funds to help State and local governments and nonprofits recover from the damage caused from the severe storms, tornadoes and straight-line winds that destroyed areas in these counties on April 9 and 10, 2011. Last month, Harkin wrote FEMA Director Craig Fugate urging him to expedite the request.

“This disaster declaration is vital as we continue the recovery process. Now the public buildings that were affected can get the help they need to rebuild,” said Harkin. “I am pleased that the administration acted quickly to approve Governor Branstad’s request.”

The counties include: Buena Vista, Cherokee, Ida, Monona, Pocahontas and Sac.
