Passed Away - Darlene Meyer



Darlene Meyer, age 91, of Sac City, Iowa, formerly of Lytton and Rockwell City, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011, at Emmanuel-St. John's Lutheran Church in Lytton, Iowa, under the direction of the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Wayne Pfannkuch will officiate with burial to follow in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Lytton. Visitation with the family present will be held at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Sac City on Friday from 5-8 p.m.

Born September 14, 1919, in Rockwell City, Iowa, Darlene Meyer was the daughter of Wilbur and Alta (Leonard) Hurd. She received her education in Lytton, graduating from high school in 1936.

On November 24, 1937, she was married to Martin Cleland at the Presbyterian Church in Lytton. To this union three children were born, Marlene, Donald, and Martin. Martin passed away in 1947. On January 1, 1950, Darlene married Harold Meyer at the Chapel of the Chimes in Portland, Oregon. They were blessed with two children, Susan and Donna. Harold passed away in 1996.

Darlene was a longtime member of Emmanuel-St. John's Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, both in Lytton. She worked as a laboratory technician and bookkeeper at Lytton Co-op Creamery for 23 years until it closed. She later provided child care out of her home which she especially loved.

Survivors include four children, Marlene (Vern) Langenwalter of LaQuinta, CA, Martin (Valerie) Cleland of Manson, Susan (Russ) Schraeder of Brooklyn Center, MN, and Donna (Charles) Peyton of Rockwell City. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Bryan (Mary) Langenwalter, Mark (Pam) Langenwalter, Sean Langenwalter, Theresa (Steve) Clark, Angela (Shannon) Ramaekers, Gaylene Bailey, Travis Cleland, Eric (Paulette) Schraeder, Dan (Kay) Schraeder, Karen (Justin) Turner, Kelli Peyton, and Christopher Peyton; 23 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; close friends Elmer and Janet Schultz of Sac City; three special grandchildren, Susan (Jim) Henson, Steven (Tammi) Schultz, and David Schultz; and several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

In addition to her husbands, Darlene was preceded in death by a son, Donald Cleland; a sister, Zina Ford; and three brothers, Cecil, Ed, and Martin Hurd.
