Esther Matilda Damm was born on January 1, 1911 in Breda, Iowa to Leo and Anna (Determan) Snyder. She received her education at St. Bernard’s Grade and High School in Breda. Her mother died in the flu epidemic in 1918 when Esther was 7 years old. She and her sister Flo went to live with the nuns at the convent in Carroll, Iowa; a few years later they returned home and helped raise their three younger sisters.
She was united in marriage to Lawrence Damm on August 13, 1929 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. They farmed at Breda and Schaller, Iowa unit 1935 when the family moved to a farm southwest of Okabena. Esther was a homemaker who loved her family. She would babysit her grandchildren at a moment’s notice and always have cookies when they came.
Esther and Lawrence were avid dancers and never missed a Sunday night dance at the Coliseum in Worthington. She was a member of Okabena Legion Auxiliary and a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster where she belonged to the Altar Society and Rosary makers. She also taught religion for many years.
She entered Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake in May 2002 where she passes away on November 2, 2010 at the age of 99 years 10 months and 2 days.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence on July 4, 1992. Also preceding Esther in death were four of her sisters.
She is survived by her children; Robert (Catherine) Damm of Worthington, Howard (Beverly) Damm of Okabena, and Mary (Wayne) Rumbough of Spirit Lake, Iowa. Esther is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 16 great great grandchildren, her sister Connie (Don) Kellner of Cold Spring, MN, and one sister-in-law Zola Damm of Sac City, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial for Esther M. Damm will be on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 11 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster with Father Russell Scepaniak officiating. Family and friends may call one hour before the service on Friday at the church. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Brewster.
Osterberg-Hansen Funeral Home of Heron Lake is helping the family with arrangements.
