Taxed to death and what do we have to show for it?
ReplyDeleteIt always amazes me how Sac City has one of the highest tax levies in the State of Iowa and are always financially broke and everything is outdated or shot. They are kind of like the Democrats in Washington; continue to spend money and add staff. Sac City government needs to be streamlined dramatically.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good question, what is Sac's tax levy?
ReplyDeleteI'm from a Sac County town as well, all of our stuff is outdated, has been ignored and shoved off as "not in the budget" for so many years. Now, we are our own municipality, have outdated electrical lines, are dangerous, and we have approximately 33% of the power lost through those lines prior to even getting to homes. Our streets are horrible, need redone. Yet, we have money for raises to our employees and spend money investing in wind projects that end up being a bust. It's time for a change. OUR city governments need to start streamlining and the council needs to get their crap together...or vote them out. If only our town wasn't SO inbred!
ReplyDeleteSac City's property owners are paying $17.15/1000 right now. It WAS at $24.50/1000. When I talked to the city administrator about this he mentioned that he was proud of the fact that they have been able to lower the taxes every year since his hire.
ReplyDeleteGotta be careful, though. There is a group of people who will probably run for council on the next round who are very much FOR raising those taxes back into the sky.
FTR, I'm not trying to suggest that $17.15 is low. For what we are getting, (bloated employee pool, shitty looking un-kept town with dangerous abandoned buildings full of mold, garbage truck whose last leg is duct-taped together, I could go on and on,) $17.15 is outrageous. It should also be noted that the ONLY reason taxes went down that far is because the aquatic center bond came off the books.
With everything that the last couple generations of city council ignored (Special thank you to those irresponsible scumbag city councilmen Jim Johnston and Gary “unable to get elected” Hansen who are now and always have been part of the problem,) I’m not sure how the city is going to avoid raising taxes again to fix it all. They certainly don’t have a plan, other than to spend tens of thousands of our dollars putting brand new playground equipment in the middle of a flood plain, that is.
Excuse me Curtis but the City Administrator is not the only one that has lowered the taxes Without the finance committee Jim J., Jim F. and the mayor who work on the budget diligently over the past 3 years it would not have happened!!!! Give credit where credit is due...... I am so tired of you bashing Jim J. and calling him a scumbag. He knows more about city government than most people in the state. So instead of bashing him maybe you ask him for his opinions rather then calling him names. As far as I am concerned you are the scumbag.
ReplyDelete"He was proud of the fact that -they- have been able to..." is what I wrote. The exact quote from Adam was, "I am proud of the fact that -we- have been able to..."
ReplyDeleteJim Johnston has used his knowledge of how government works to keep controversial votes from becoming too public, or public in a way in which it was too late for the public to do anything about it, leading people go feel helpless against the onslaught of the will of the tax-raising scumbags like Jim Johnston sitting on the Sac City, Iowa City Council.
I really do think our city employees work hard. I work in the park but am not on the city payroll. I watch the city employees working in this park, trying to keep up with all of the mowing, picking up branches, weed-eating the grounds plus all of the other things that need fixed. My husband used to work on the garbage route. What a filthy, stinking job that was. So I feel sorry for them too. Those that work at the plants help around the park and where they are needed when they have free time. Plus the road work, painting school crossing lines. The list could go on and on. Plus the hours they put in at night spraying, plowing roads. I think they deserve the pay they get. And I thought this way before I started this job in the park. I am not sucking up to anyone. As far as that fence in the cemetery. Its an animal killer, looks like it came from a scary movie, and its ugly even if it is historical. I know my opinion doesn't mean much but I have lived in this town all of my life and even if we have crappy streets, and some old buildings it is still home.
