Carl Valentine Sproul, age 95, of Lake View, IA, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Carl was born February 14, 1915, in Missouri Valley, IA to William and Jemima (Coulthard) Sproul. He attended Missouri Valley High School and graduated with the class of 1933.

On June 18, 1938 he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Chambers in Storm Lake. Carl and Mary were married over 72 years. They welcomed two children: Judith and John.

Carl worked for Swift Packing Company as a meat inspector in Sioux City. He served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946. After the service he worked for John Deere Implement in Le Mars, IA. He came to Lake View as a bulk fuel agent. In 1954 he began his banking career with Farmers State Bank in Lake View. He had served on the Board to Directors at Farmers State Bank since 1958 and chairman since 1998 until the time of his death. He was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years, serving in several offices and a member of the Masonic Lodge for 68 years. As a member of Lakes United Methodist Church, he served on the Board, was an active member of the Men’s Club, and served in many capacities at the church. He was a member of the Lions and Commercial Club where he served as secretary for many years. He will be greatly missed by his family and community that he loved. Carl coached youth in Little League Baseball for many years. He supported his “Chicago Cubs”, listening to the games on the radio after he lost his sight. He enjoyed growing tomatoes and peppers in his garden and loved winters in Arizona and where he grew grapefruit. He was a voracious reader and listener to books. Carl enjoyed walking Lake View, good weather or bad, he would walk his route, always knowing how many steps it took to the coffee shop and post office.

Carl is survived by his daughter Judith (Gerald) Reeves of Tucson, AZ and Lake View; grandchildren: Grant (Robin) Bullock of Crozet, VA; Eric (Heidi) Bullock of Rockford, IL; and Nicholas Bullock of Des Moines, IA; great-grandsons: Matthew, Daniel, Samuel and Benjamin; great-granddaughters: Jordon, Grace, Seven and Hannah; many nieces, nephews and extended family members. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; William and Jemima; wife Mary; son John; brothers: Harold, Fred, John, Kenneth, Maurice, Wallace, and William; sisters: Rena, Ruth, and June; a brother and sister who died in infancy; and his son-in-law Daniel Bullock.

Carl recognized the voices of his many friends and enjoyed visiting with them. He enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. The loss of Mary and John gave him great sadness and his broken heart told him it was time to join them in peaceful eternal rest.
