Auburn City Council begins to talk about what to do in the event of a disaster
AUBURN, IOWA – MAY 10, 2010
I. What should the city council do in the event there is an emergency event?
A. Meet at City Hall.
1. Morning following event.
2. Assign tasks.
B. Know ahead of time what council member’s role will be.
1. Is that possible since each disaster is unique?
a. Hard part is continuity due to council turnover.
2. Clerk has proposed list of roles for council to work through.
3. Roles not yet assigned.
a. Identify risks.
b. Prioritize critical needs.
c. Establish staging area.
C. What about in the event of an evacuation?
1. The fire department has procedures for that
2. Establish alternate meeting places.
II. Clerk wishes city would have had a plan like this in place before the event.
A. We need to coordinate with the county.
1. Clerk wants to focus just on how Auburn will react.
B. Spend 10 to 15 minutes per council meeting putting this plan together?
1. Set up a board?
a. Start as a council.
III. What is a Disaster?
A. Mayor pro-tem woke up, thought day was normal.
1. Guy got electrocuted.
2. Trees were down.
3. Leadership couldn’t be contacted.
IV. To be put on next agenda.
