Shorty was born on June 15, 1922, north of Sac City, IA. He was the son of Eugene and Velva (Summers) Thompson. He attended Sac City schools and was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake, IA.
Shorty was married to Delores (Meister) O’Tool on October 23, 1982, in Carroll, IA. He proudly served in World War II from 1943 to 1946 where he fought at The Battle of the Bulge. Shorty was a truck driver for Crouse Cartage Company and various other transport companies. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping and spending the winters in Florida or Texas. He will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved him.
Merlyn “Shorty” Thompson, age 88, of Lake View, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice House in Fort Dodge, IA.
He is survived by his wife Delores (Dee); brother Ronald Thompson of Yukon, OK; sister Lois Adams of Sac City, IA; brother-in-law James and wife Mary Ann Meister of Lake View, IA, sister-in-law Ruth Meister of Lake View, IA, sister-in-law Dorothy Thompson of Westerville, OH; step-sons: Larry O’Tool and wife Vicki of Arcadia, IA, Dennis O’Tool and wife Cathy of Des Moines, IA; and step-daughter Shari (O’Tool) Winker of Glidden, IA, five step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Shorty was preceded in death by wife Lois Mae Huisenga and wife Blanche Kropf; also his parents Eugene and Velva; brother Wayne; sisters: Alveda and Velma Thompson and Leona Nixon; sister-in-law Jackie Thompson and brother-in-laws Nick Nixon and Dale Meister.
