ESC Middle School Cross Country Runner gets into the top ten at Carroll
By Dave Peterson
The East Sac County Cross Country Runners ran at the Kuemper meet held at Swan Lake on September 17, 2011. This is a very tough hill course so times tended to be a little slower than usual. The results are unofficial as they had computer issues and are still trying to come up with official results.
Middle School Girls
Ann Newman 35th 16:05
Adrian Newman 39th 17:05
Jordan Rain 41st 18:24
Brianna Mathews 51st 19:05
Sara Zimmerman 52nd 20:36
Vannessa Ross 57th 21:05
I did not get team placings for middle school girls
The middle school girls all ran very well in there second race. They all improved their times even on a tough course. I expect they will continue to improve as they gain confidence and conditioning.
Middle School Boys
Andrew Murley 10th 12:56
Quentin Ackerman 43rd 16:07
Quentin ran his first ever race and did very well. I expect his time and placing will improve with expierience. Andrew again ran with confidence. He went out in the lead but struggled a little with the hills. He was strong enough to hang on to a top ten finish and will continue to improve as he gets better conditioning.
High School Girls
Lauren Goodenow 40th 19:50
Lauren ran very well as our only girl again this meet. We expect to have more of our team back over the next few weeks.
High School boys
Cory Carlyle 15th 19:13
Kelly Nutt 31st 20:19
Ryan Nutt 35th 20:30
James Probanz 45th 20:59
Colin Haberl 56th 21:43
Prezley Gregg 59th 21:49
Boys team 4th 170 pts
Our young boys team continues to mature. They had their highest team finish ever and tied their fewest team points ever. Cory continues to improve and run extremely well. Our senior leaders, Ryan and Kelly ran their typical solid race that we need. James is continuing to improve and is learning how to run with the top runners. I expect he will keep improving through the year. Prezley and Colin both are showing improvment and we are hoping they will move up a little more before we reach conference and district meets. It will be fun to watch this team as they come together over the next few weeks.

Sac City Mayor convenes off the record committee to determine how council should react on “Safe Routes to School” program
September 12, 2011
Sac City, Iowa –Mayor Powell – Bloes convened an off the record committee to make recommendations to the Sac City Council regarding a “Safe Routes to School” program. She presented a resolution that was not read or reviewed publicly that the council approved without discussion, except to clarify that the city would not have to match funds. The mayor indicated that the off the record committee would soon be meeting to determine how much money the city council will ask for.
The details of the “Safe Routes to School” program were not reviewed, but it was inferred that there may be sidewalk, crosswalk, and street light replacement. She did not indicate when the off the record committee will be meeting to make these decisions for the council, other than to indicate that it will be “soon”.

Steve Irwin and Frank Strain address the Sac Council on storm sewer concerns
September 12, 2011
Sac City, Iowa –Following are selected excerpts of the conversation. TSN makes no claim that this is a complete transcript of the above video.
Barb Powell
This is down in the area of the golf course, that street that runs down in fro not Bill’s, Tom’s and Steve-
Steve Irwin
10th and Gishwiller. Well, Frank and I have been observing this for a lot of years. As most of you know, I’ve lived in the neighborhood, I haven’t been there for about 5 years, but I still own a duplex right in that area.
Maybe a little history there, Gishwiller has got a real low spot between 10th and 11th street, and that storm sewer, on big rains, it always, water’s back up and it gets pretty deep in there…
And in fact when it gets high enough, the outlet is Frank’s lot, it’s just east of my duplex so it runs down that lot and then it can build up on the, what would it be, Toni Shea’s house there, and then it runs down through Brenny’s, and then on out through the golf course. I personally have noticed a change though in the last, maybe the last 12 months. the basement of my duplex is historically during very wet periods will get some dampness. Not bad, it might get just a little bit of water in the basement here and there. I am now getting water on every rain, I mean even, when it raind a half an inch here 10 days ago, I got a lot of water in my basement, and it’s got soil in it, it’s coming, I believe through the wall, and I’ve got no way of proving this, but I’m sure that storm sewer is backing up, and I think what it’s doing is forcing its way right into that basement. I know that there was an attempt to fix that, Bob I don’t remember, has it been maybe five years ago?
Bob Scheffler
No we didn’t.
Steve Irwin
I don’t know what, technically is going on there, I mean, I’m not sitting here claiming to be a drainage expert, but there’s definitely something going on there, and I think I’m probably getting the brunt of it, and frankly, I’m getting tired of cleaning the basement, and especially during …
I mean, it’s a drought, practically right now. There’s no way water should be coming in during a half inch rain in this kind of deal right now, and I’m just getting it every time, and, in fact last time we had over an inch it was deep enough, it drowned the pilot light in my water heater, I mean so it’s, you know, it’s gotta be a foot deep to do that.
Nick Frohardt
With an inch of rain?
Steve Irwin
With an inch of rain, yes.
Nick Frohardt
There’s something going on
Steve Irwin
There’s something going on thee. Now, I know Frank’s here, I know he’s got some pictures … blowouts in his lot, and that they’re getting worse, they’re just working right up the hill… It’s like little volcanoes, It’s just working back
(Frank Strain passes photos around the council and explains them. Frank claims that he has been pursuing this issue since Mahannah was the city administrator. He also shows pictures of a hole in Shea’s yard that the city coned over a year ago, but otherwise did nothing with that is not starting to erode further. He also shows photos of where a city sewer has sunk down making it inoperable leaving the water to drain through Shea’s yard and into a private tile)
Bob Scheffler
Over in Sheas, there is a problem there. It probably won’t be tomorrow, but hopefully Wednesday, we’re going to dig that again, and it’s gotton bigger, and it looks like there’s two lines that must be in there. You can see one. You can look down, you can see one. It must be another one deeper that maybe is the culprit…
But up there by Shea’s, that needs to be done, and I think in answer to your’s frank, I think if that tile is full, it’s creating a back pressure and pushing the water out…
The water coming back in your basement, I wasn’t aware of that, that much, that is.
(The city administrator and maintenance department head make the argument that the sewers are too broken up to send a camera into, but will try when they dig up Shea’s line.)
(Brenny indicates that on his observation that the street seems to be sinking in front of his house, this may indicate undermining which may eventually lead to street problems.)

Early, Iowa's Alyssa Drey gets 10 digs in AIB's First Volleyball Match Win In Program History
DES MOINES, IOWA - AIB won its first volleyball match in school history, defeating Wentworth Military Academy in four games (25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23) Saturday afternoon at the AIB Activities Center.
The win improves the Eagles to 1-6 on the season, while Wentworth drops to 0-5.
In game one, AIB took the lead for good at 6-5 on a kill by junior Megan Calmer (Panora, Iowa/Panorama). The Eagles stretched the lead to 24-13 before the Dragons scored the next four points. Calmer added the final kill to put the game away 25-17.
After a back and forth battle in game two, AIB closed the game with three straight points for the 25-23 victory, taking 2-0 lead for the match.
Wentworth started game three strong, jumping to an early 5-1 lead. The Eagles closed the gap to 14-10, but would get no closer and dropped game three, 19-25.
Junior Allie Martin (Crawfordsville, Iowa/WACO) started the fourth game with two straight service aces, pacing AIB to an early 4-0 lead before the Dragons scored 11 of the next 14 points to go ahead, 7-11. Freshman Katlynn Gannon (Rippey, Iowa/East Greene) served the next five points, including two service aces, to give the Eagles a 12-11 advantage. Wentworth would respond, going ahead 15-17, before Martin added two more service aces and a service point to regain the lead for AIB at 18-17. The two teams would stay within a point of each other until, with AIB leading 24-23, the Dragons made a hitting error to end the game and give the Eagles their first ever win.
The Eagles were led in kills by Calmer with 16 followed by junior Sarah Maxheimer (Clarion, Iowa/Clarion-Goldfield) with 11.
