On December 3, 2009 Deputy Sonny Bruns of the Sac County Sheriff's Department suddenly resigned. (Letter of resignation follows.) Deputy Bruns patrolled the city of Odebolt, for whom the Sac County Sheriff's Department contracted to provide law enforcement protection for earlier this year.

At the December 8, 2009 Sac County Supervisors meeting, Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure reported to the Supervisors that he met with the Odebolt City Council the evening of December 7, 2009. At that city council meeting, it was agreed that the Sheriff's Department would only bill Odebolt for those hours that they could provide a patrol. According to Sheriff McClure, the Odebolt City Council is very pleased with the service that the Sac County Sheriff's department has provided so far, and would like to continue the contract arrangement as soon as the department is able to hire another deputy.
With The Sac County Supervisor's granted approval for the Sheriff's Department to will begin advertising for the opening. There will be a roughly two month application and period of consideration after which applicants will be given the physical fitness test. Those applicants that pass the physical fitness test will then be given the civil service exam.
The Civil Service Commission, which is responsible for administering the civil service exam, and reviewing claims and raises, is currently short two of three members. The only person currently sitting on the Civil Service Commission is Doug Rice of Early, Iowa.
The Sac County Supervisors will be responsible for appointing two more members to that board.
