20 Bypass to be open to N14 by Fall of 2012
Spring has arrived and the grading contractors are back moving dirt for new 4 lane Highway 20 from Hwy 4 to Early.
The current plan is to close N28 north of Lytton on Monday April 18th so they can haul dirt across the road and also remove a section of pavement so N28 can be built up to meet new Highway 20. It will be closed 2 – 3 months while the contractor completes this work. After the road is up to grade they will place crushed asphalt or limestone on the road and open it up for traffic. It should remain open until fall when the paving contractor closes it to pave N28 and the intersection with new Highway 20. Traffic will be detoured to N14.
Details are being worked out to close M50 south of Nemaha probably the week of April 18th so dirt can be hauled across the road and M50 built up approximately 10 feet. The work on this section will result in M50 being closed for 3 – 4 months. M50 will be surfaced with crushed asphalt initially and then get a hard surface before winter. Paving of this stretch of Highway 20 will most likely not take place until summer of 2013. Traffic will be detoured to Highway 71.
Gravel roads will be closed as the contractor moves dirt and builds up the intersections. The length of time they are closed will vary depending on the work that needs to be completed but 2 consecutive roads will not normally be closed.
If construction goes as planned New 20 will be open to traffic up to N14 northeast of Sac City the fall of 2012.
Please drive carefully and follow the posted detours. As with all road construction projects the progress depends on the weather.
