Sac City Council to consider creation of open burning permit

SAC CITY, IOWA - APRIL 11, 2011

At the April 11, 2011 Sac City Council meeting, the council will consider the creation of a permit that will allow citizens with a "compelling interest" to burn during the eight months of the year in which it is currently not allowed.

This will be handled as an amendment to the current ordinance and will theoretically not effect the current functioning of that law which allows two months in the spring and two months in the fall for open burning of yard waste.

  1. Son of a....

This is going the WRONG direction. Too many people as it is pile leaves/grass up, light a match, and just let it smolder, making the air in Sac City toxic for entire days.

The burn ordinance needs to be amended to require constant supervision of any burning, and encourage those that do burn to maintain a hot fire to minimize smoke/smoldering.

  2. Go to the next council meeting or call the city administrator and voice your opinion. I am sure there are a LOT of people with your same opinion. Plus there are people that are allergic to the smoke. I totally agree with, there should be a total burn ban!!!

  3. I think the smell of pig crap that engulfs the entire town several times a years is really as bad or even worse. If it is knifed in like is the law we wouldn't have to smell and taste that either. Lets make them all abide by the law!!!

  4. Who exactly are these citizens that have a "compelling interest" to burn? Burning anything in this day and age(21st century), short of maybe refuse from a natural catastrophe or throwing a log in a fire pit on a still night, just isn't necessary. There will be a strong likely-hood of abuse. Humans being who they are, will be burning everything from used motor oil to old computer monitors The list of carcinogens released from burning paper alone is as long as your forearm. What will the property insurance underwriters do when they see the community has a ordinance like this on the books? Lower your premiums? I don't think so.

Progressive states such as Illinois,Minnesota and Wisconsin have banned open burning for at least the last decade. Their economic brochures don't say "move to our state and bring your matches"

Compost your leaves/brush, send garbage to the landfill where it belongs, and recycle everything you can! Even though you may "like the smell of napalm in the morning", your neighbors may not.
