Evelyn Christena Auen, age 95, of Carnarvon, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.
Evelyn was born on April 21, 1915, in Breda, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Augusta (Dose) Garrels. She attended country school near Arcadia, through eighth grade. On November 22, 1934, Evelyn was united in marriage to Henry Auen at the Presbyterian Church in Carnarvon. They lived near Breda, then on a farm near Carnarvon, and after Henry passed away in 1979 Evelyn moved into town. This union was blessed with five children: Kenneth, Dorothy, Bonnie, Peggy and Elise.
She was baptized and confirmed at Wheatland Presbyterian Church in her youth. She remained a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church where she was active in ladies aid and enjoyed working in the kitchen.
Evelyn was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was a good farmwife, raising chickens, and working hard to create a comfortable home for her family, cooking and baking, often giving neighbors her baked goods, enjoyed gardening, canning much of the food she raised, and was quite a seamstress making many dresses. She loved to travel and had special memories of her vacations to Alaska, Panama Canal and California. She also enjoyed fishing and playing cards, especially pitch and pinochle.
Survivors include her daughters: Bonnie and husband Loren Richards of Sac City, Peggy and husband Richard Mace of Sioux City, and Elise and husband Joseph Pick of Carroll; grandchildren: Dan Richards of Florida, Lynae (Paul) Tesdall of Sac City, Laurie (James) Gross of Minneapolis, Krystal (Paige) Busch of Springdale, AR, Michael Gergis of Sac City, Melissa (John) Hoelker of Dexter, IA, Angela (Stefen) Lucachick of St. Louis Park, MN, Aaron (Kelly) Pick of Carroll, Nathan (Kristen) Pick of Monterey, CA, Brad (Brigit) Pick of Davenport, Adam Pick of Granger and fiancé Linsey Williams; step granddaughter Victoria Rodgers of Colorado; 18 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband Henry; sister Orelene O’Tool, brother Lennis Garrels, son Kenneth, daughter Dorothy, and two grandsons.
