Matilda Frances Drey, age 92, of Early, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, IA. Matilda Frances Wolff was born on February 22, 1917, to parents Edward and Margaret (Lummel) Wolff in Howells, NE. She attended a Catholic grade school in Aloys, NE, until losing her father at a young age. She moved with her mother to Carroll, IA, where she attended St. Lawrence Catholic School for a few years. She then moved to West Point, NE, before returning to Iowa to work. She was baptized into the Catholic faith as an infant at St. Peter & Paul’s Catholic Church in Howells, NE. She was later confirmed in her faith at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll, IA.
Matilda found her life partner in Alvin Drey and they were united in marriage on December 29, 1936, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, IA. They shared a loving marriage and were blessed with seven children: Theresa, George, Raymond, Ronald, Richard, Margaret, and Randy.
Matilda built a loving home for her family and relished her role as a farm wife. She enjoyed the farming lifestyle and took pleasure in quilting, cooking and gardening. She cherished her family which includes 22 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by many that knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Theresa Scanlan of Carroll, IA, George (Lois) Drey of Carroll, IA, Raymond (Susan) Drey of Ida Grove, IA, Ronald (Betty) Drey of Early, IA, Richard (Kathleen) Drey of Shellsburg, IA, Margaret “Peggy” (Paul) Horwart of Stamford, NE, and Randy (Debra) Drey of Alta, IA; 22 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren; sister Mary Ernesti of Howells, NE, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband Alvin; her parents Edward and Margaret; step-father Joseph Siepker; father and mother-in-law Peter and Elizabeth Drey; brother Leo Wolff; sisters: Sr. Veronica Wolff and Helen Ortmeier, brothers-in-law: Joe Ernesti and Henry Ortmeier; sisters-in-law: Betty Wolff and Marcella Wolff; and granddaughter Lisa Mandernach.
