Sac City Council adopts “wait and see” stance regarding Wunschel building
SAC CITY, IOWA – SEPTEMBER 13, 2010
Local main street business owners have recently put pressure upon the Sac City Council to help demolish the building known as the “the old Matt’s Shoes building” referred to hereafter as the ”Wunschel” property or building.
The Wunschel building is deteriorated to the point of crumbling, and is indisputably about to harm surrounding buildings which contain ongoing businesses. The building constitutes a special hazard due to the presence of mold and asbestos.
The city administrator applied for a Keep Iowa Beautiful grant to help with the cost of demolishing the building. Following was the response:
Letter of Rejection from Keep Iowa Beautiful
He also made inquiries into getting a “Browns Field” grant which will pay for half the cost, (about $3,500.00) of asbestos removal. Unfortunately, in order to apply for the grant, the city has to actually own the building, and therefore take on all liability that ownership entails.
Councilperson Nick Frohardt continues to be against ownership of the property. He wanted it made clear that the vote by the council to have a structural engineer look the building over is not a commitment to assume ownership of the building.
The council did not take any action except to wait to see what the engineer says before taking any more action.
Curiously, a meeting that is rumored to have taken place on September 8, 2010 with the current person in charge of managing the trust that owns this building, (Dee Wunschel,) was not discussed…
