Joint East Sac County School Board Members Interpret East Sac County School’s Mission Statement
SAC CITY, IOWA – AUGUST 16, 2010
Following is East Sac County School’s Mission Statement:
“East Sac County Schools empower all students to become productive, responsible citizens of an ever-changing global society”
East Sac County School Superintendent, Dr. Fiene asked the joint school boards to interpret this and how it might manifest itself in the day to day operations of the school.
Philips: “Basically we have to provide the skills [for our students] to enter the workforce or secondary education.”
Rodman: PARAPHRASING Rodman wishes to see all students “get a chance to play” whether that be in softball or in school, and therefore likes the inclusion of the word “all” in the mission statement.
Brotherton PARAPHRASING Brotherton finds that the word “Empower” to encompasses the concepts of encouraging, enabling and suggesting and feels that it is a very powerful concept. He further agrees with Rodman’s feelings about the meaning of the word “All”
Sands: PARAPHRASING reminds him of “No child left behind” and his desire that all students be held to a defined set of standards that are identical for each student.
Mahannah: PARAPHRASING seems to feel that the word “empower” would mandate that the teachers have the tools to help all students, which she doesn’t feel is always the case.
