SAC CITY, IOWA – MAY 29, 2010
With the approach of Memorial Day, interest has again been renewed in the fate of the antique fence at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City, Iowa. Upon investigation, I learned that the fence was to be “refurbished” and reinstalled by Memorial Day, 2010.
With sketchy reports coming in from the net, I decided to go take a look for myself and share what I found. The following is my photo journal of that event.
Here is the fence on the north edge of the north most fence. As you can see, the city has stuck snow fence poles into the ground to stabilize the original fence.
Here is a close up of the same shot. As you can see, the city has used wire to fasten the antique fence to the snow fence poles.
Here is the fence on the south edge of the north most fence. As you can see, on this end, the city has it fastened to the original post.
Here is a close up of the bolts used to fasten it.
In this photo you can see a stick that is acting to maintain the fences height. In this photo you can also see that the city has fastened the pieces of fence together with new bolts.
In this photo you can see the original ground mounts that were re-used to secure the fence to the ground…
…some of them were not used.
In this photo, you can see that the fence has been straightened out, considerably.
As you can see in this photo, which was taken on May 29, 2010 at 11:30AM, the fencing on the south side has not been replaced. At the time and date of this photo, there was
The following video was made at the same time that the photos were taken. Regarding the issue of refurbishing the fence, it appears that while it is straightened out, (see photo above) the fence itself has not been restored. There has been no apparent effort to preserve the fence.

I commend the Sac City workers for getting the fence up for Memorial Day. This is wonderful in my opinion. I,however, assume they will be repainting the fence and properly giving it also, obvious care it needs very SOON. In addition, replacing the remaining sections not yet installed to the south of the part now put in place of the fence. In the time frame the fence was down over several months, I expected for it to be refurbished as well as possible by our city employees. Things I would point out, that stick out "like a sore thumb", are the new posts which also need painted as well as the fence, and the shiny silver bolts etc used. The silver color posts with red tops are not overly attractive to represent the ability of our City in maintaining historical items. Doing a job in a half way manner, is not exactly what many of us had expected, but it is nice that they've got the project well underway, but now to complete it appropriately! Perhaps there are some volunteers to help with refurbishing of the landmark fence who have talent in this area, if our city council etc. will allow this?????
