Letter to the Editor - Mad about people parking in the fire lane

This really makes me mad. Go sit in the food pride parking lot. Count how many people park in the fire lane.

I was there one day, two people parked in the fire lane. I go to my car, and the Chevy S-10 next to me has "Fire Chief" stickers on the topper. This is news.

People are too ignorant to walk from the lot to their car. I complained to a worker, and he agrees and says that he has seen firemen park in the fire lane before. People don't do this at Wal-Mart, why are they allowed to do it in Sac City? if there ever was a fire, who’s going to be responsible then?

Brett

  1. I am guilty of this and will stop as of now!

  2. Actually, people DO do it at WalMart. Just not as blatantly. And seriously... when is the Food Pride parking lot SO full that it's a significant walk to get to your car?

  3. Have you stopped to see who is parking in the fire lane? More often than not, it's a little old lady or man, who didn't feel like risking their life trying to walk across an icy parking lot.
It’s not to be said I haven't used that lane, or that other people probably shouldn't. I treat it as a loading zone, as do many people using the fire lane in front of Wal-Mart. I stay in my car, and drop off my passengers.
I agree that people, myself included, take advantage of the fire lane - however the risk of fire is so minimal, and I would be out of the lane long before fire personnel arrived. Before you angrily enforce the no parking law, try to find a solution for how your grandmother is going to get from her car across that slick, dangerous parking lot so she can buy her cat food.
There are bigger fish to fry.

  4. Get over it! That has happened for 20+ years. Food Pride never was and never will be Wal-Mart, and if you are interested, spend some time watching a Wal-Mart lot and see how many people actually do park in front of the store in the fire lane. You may be surprised. As for Food Pride, or Joyce's as it will always be known by me, until something bad happens and someone actually gets hurt and medical or fire personnel are unable to get to them, nothing will change. It's Sac City Brett, nothing ever changes!!!!

  5. Just because something has been done a certain way for 20+ years doesn't mean it shouldn't be addressed. This mindset is exactly why this town has so many problems!

  6. In washington DC, they push cars out of the way if theres a fire. i see people disrespect ambulances and firemen all the time. Great point. try driving one of these sometime and see what they deal with.

if that one risk happens, your grandma might not be saved if there are cars blocking the fire lane. two ways to look at it.

  7. I am disabled and some days I would love to park there but it is a firelane and you are not to park there so I do not.

Even if I am having a good day I do not use my disability sticker due to I figure someone worse then me would need it that day.

  8. First and foremost, this is not Washington DC, however, I don't disagree with needing to respect response vehicles (ambulances, fire trucks, etc). People..this is Sac City. Could a fire possibly happen at Food Pride..certainly yes. Are the odds likely, no. I don't know what harm it has caused if the community lets ELDERLY and HANDICAPPED citizens park there while getting their groceries, etc. I do think that it should be somewhat monitored but by no means is a "parking cop" needed. I do have an issue with kids or able adults parking there however. I also have a problem with this all together should a delivery truck have a problem getting in to drop off freight.

Again people..this is Sac City. I would like to believe that we have larger issues at hand here but maybe that's just me. If nothing else, at least these locals are shopping LOCAL and not running off to Wal-Mart so that we can help finance third world countries!

  9. I've never seen or read so much nit-picking on minor issues. Let's get concerned about issues that help make us a great town or great citizens. Say hello to the stranger you've never met. Offer a helping hand when needed to whom ever. Everyone do what they know they should and stop worrying about what others are doing. If it is not hurting anything at the moment, stop making big deals out of small common issues all across America. People are people no matter where you are California, Texas, Iowa, you name it. Sac City is no different. People are people it is simple, a human trait. So see what you can do to be doing what is right yourself instead of looking for fault everywhere you turn! Show by example and use a little kindness and even a smile to those around!

  10. nine times out of ten the people parking there are NOT the elderly. the elderly still have respect, which was a taught trait in their generations. additionally the handicapped park in the first stall, thats why its reserved for them.

In essence, the people parking in the fire lane are making it more difficult for the elderly and handicapped, because people have to walk around the parked vehicles.

  12. What is everyone not understanding?!! It is the law and is illegal to park there for any reason! It is not okay to let anyone get by with it! Emergency vehicles must be able to get through if and when an emergency occurs there! I say that any time anyone sees any vehicle other than an emergency vehicle there, they should immediately call the police department so that the driver can be cited for breaking the law!

  13. aren't the lines in front of the store yellow? doesn't this imply that it's a loading zone, not a fire lane?

  14. Could the store designate 4 of the better parking spaces for those over 75 years old. These would be non-handicapped spaces. The sign could read, "RESERVED FOR OLD FART".

  15. Call the police and have the vehicle ticketed.

  16. You wouldn't have time, half the time anyone parks there it is for an in and out situation.

  17. As concerned citizens why don't we call the police to report underage drinking going on at one of the downtown bars? Or how about we call the police to address the drugs being sold out of some of the houses here in Sac City? I feel as if there are FAR better reasons to call the police than to call about someone parking in front of Food Pride to run into the store quickly.
